White Label Rank Tracker: What to Check on Data, Location, Cadence, AI Overviews and Branding

By · November 6, 2026 · 8 min read

Rankings are often the first number a client checks, and a white label rank tracker puts that number under the agency's name. Since 31 August 2026 there is a new way for it to look wrong. Search Console's Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode is now rolled out to all websites, and a client who opens it can fairly ask why a keyword the agency reports at position 1 is losing clicks to an answer box above it.

The tracker is not lying. It is answering a narrower question than the client thinks. This guide covers the five checks that decide whether clients trust the rankings they see, with Google's own documentation for the parts that are easy to get wrong.

Key takeaways

  • White label means no vendor name anywhere: the PDF, the live link and the email.
  • Ask how results are collected. Google's spam policies name scraping for rank-checking.
  • Track from the client's city or postcode, in the client's language, with the same settings every month.
  • Weekly or fortnightly checks suit a monthly report. Daily checks mostly add noise.
  • Track the top 100, the ranking URL and whether an AI Overview sits above the result.

Why does a position 1 now need context?

Because Search Console counts an AI Overview as a position, while many rank trackers count organic results only. Google's Performance report documentation says an AI Overview occupies a single position in search results, and every link inside it gets that same position. A carousel works the same way.

So when an AI Overview sits at the top, the first organic result below it can be position 2 to Search Console and position 1 to a tracker that counts organic listings. AgencyReportr's tracker works the second way: it reports the organic position and records which search features, such as an AI Overview, appeared on the page. Neither number is wrong. A report that shows only one of them invites the client's question.

The new Generative AI performance report adds a third view. Google says it shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device, and that it reached all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. It shows impressions only: no clicks and no position. It answers "were we shown in the AI answer", not "where do we rank".

In the client report, give each view its own job and label it. The tracker answers "where does the page rank for this keyword, from this city, on this date". Search Console answers "where did we appear on average, across every search that showed us". The Generative AI report answers "how often were we shown inside AI answers". A one-line note such as "position 1 in organic results, below an AI Overview" heads off the question before the client asks it, and keeps the agency's name attached to an explanation rather than a discrepancy.

What should a white label rank tracker hide, and what should it show?

A white label rank tracker should hide the vendor everywhere the client looks and show the agency instead. Three places give it away:

Our white-label reports page shows how the PDF, live link and email look under your brand.

Check 1: where does the ranking data come from?

Ask the vendor directly, because Google does not provide rankings to anyone. Its spam policies list machine-generated traffic as a violation and say: "This includes scraping results for rank-checking purposes", when done without express permission. Google publishes no ranking API; the only position data it gives a site owner is the average position in Search Console.

Many rank trackers, AgencyReportr included, buy results from a specialist search data provider rather than querying Google from their own servers. What matters to the agency is that the vendor can tell you how its results are collected, and that they are stable. A vague answer usually shows up later as rankings that vanish and reappear for no reason.

Check 2: is it tracking from the client's location and language?

It should, because the same search returns different results in different places. Google's explainer on how Search works says relevancy can depend on the user's location, language and device, and gives the example of a search for bicycle repair shops showing different results in Paris and in Hong Kong.

A tracker set to a whole country reports a national average no real customer sees. For a local business, set the city or postcode it serves; for a national brand, track each main market. In AgencyReportr each keyword carries its own location and language. Keep them unchanged from month to month, or the trend stops comparing like with like. One more honest limit: AgencyReportr checks desktop results, so pair it with Search Console, whose position data covers every device.

Check 3: how often should a white label rank tracker check?

Weekly or fortnightly is enough for a monthly client report. Rankings move a little every day, and a client who sees a daily chart sees noise and asks about it. Weekly or fortnightly checks give four or two points a month, enough to show direction without the jitter.

Daily checks are sold as better, and they earn their cost only in short windows: a site migration, a redesign or a recovery from a Google update, when a drop needs catching within days. AgencyReportr does not check daily. It rechecks every keyword every 7, 15 or 30 days, a cadence you set for each project, and checks new keywords as soon as they are added. During a migration, watch Search Console's own data, which Google says normally arrives in two to three days.

Whatever the cadence, alerts about a sharp drop should reach the agency, not the client, so there is time to investigate before the report goes out.

Check 4: how deep should it track, and what should it record?

Track the top 100, the ranking URL and the search features on the page. A keyword moving from 64 to 18 is real progress, and a tracker that stops at 20 reports it as "not ranking" until the last step. The URL matters when two of the client's pages trade places for one keyword: the ranking wobbles, and the URL column shows why.

Features matter more each year. A position 1 under an AI Overview, a map pack and a video carousel is a different result from a position 1 at the top of the page, so the report should say which features appeared. For where the brand shows up inside AI answers themselves, in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, use AI visibility tracking alongside the rankings.

Check 5: how should rankings reach the client?

As a branded PDF and a live link, on a fixed day, from the same address every month. Search Console data normally arrives in two to three days, so a report that pairs rankings with Search Console clicks reads best a few days into the month. Make sure the email reaches the inbox too: the sending domain needs SPF, DKIM and DMARC records in place.

The proof that a white label rank tracker works is simple: clients read the rankings and never ask which tool produced them. Finally, check the price model against how you sell. Per-keyword pricing suits a few large accounts; per-client pricing suits many small ones. A white label reporting tool with SEO rank tracking built in saves paying for a separate tracker and a separate report builder.

White label rank tracker FAQ

What is a white label rank tracker?

A rank tracker whose reports, live links and emails carry the agency's brand instead of the vendor's. The client sees the agency's logo, colours and domain, and replies go to the agency.

How often should a rank tracker check keywords for a monthly client report?

Weekly or fortnightly is enough for a monthly report: it gives four or two points a month, which shows a trend without day-to-day noise. AgencyReportr rechecks every 7, 15 or 30 days, set per project.

Why does my rank tracker show a better position than Search Console?

They measure different things. Search Console averages the topmost position across every impression, and counts an AI Overview as one position. A rank tracker usually checks one keyword from one location and may count organic results only.

Does Google allow rank tracking?

Google's spam policies say scraping results for rank-checking without express permission violates its policies and Terms of Service. Google publishes no ranking API; its own position data is the average position in Search Console. Ask any vendor how its results are collected.

How deep should a white label rank tracker check?

The top 100. A keyword moving from 64 to 18 is real progress, and a tracker that stops at 20 reports it as not ranking until the last step.
